Festivities
January - February "Thaipusam" (celebrated on the 10th month of the Hindu calendar) falls usually in the month of January or early February. Hindu devotees will flock to the well-known Batu Caves in Selangor for this day of penance and thanksgiving. And every year, tourists too will not miss this opportunity to witness the procession of Kavadis and other traditions related to Thaipusam.
March PETRONAS Malaysian F-1 Grandprix - Malaysia holds this event annually. The date has to be confirmed during the calendar years. Last year it was held on 16 March 2001 to 18 March 2001 at Sepang International Circuit (SIC).If you are visiting during this month and wish to see Michael Schumacher or David Coulthard competing do confirm the dates of actual event.
May Telom Descent - you can witness the world's wildest white water kayaking races in Pahang. It is a 2-day event that starts at Tiat Village in the Cameron Highlands and passes through some of Malaysia's most spectacular rainforest and a number of aboriginal villages. Last year it was held on 20 May 2001. DO check for details if you are in town.
June Gawai Dayak or Gawai Festival - A holiday in Sarawak. The ethnic groups in Sarawak, Ibans, Orang Ulu and Bidayuh hold their harvest celebrations during this month. Guests are welcomed to their longhouses and are entertained with 'tuak' (rice wine) and traditional delicacies. The occasion is a swirl of colours and movement as people attired in ceremonial costumes dance to the beat of traditional musical instruments.
August August 31 is the National Day or The Independence Day celebrations begins with spectacular parade in the morning along the streets of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city, graced by the presence of His Majesty, the King of Malaysia, and government leaders. Participants in the parade comprise members from the public and private sectors, the armed forces, non-governmental organisations, school children and representatives from a wide segment of multi-racial Malaysia. Colourful and energetic performances celebrating Malaysia's achievements are held at the Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square. Sporting events, competitions, exhibitions and cultural performances are held in the various states.
October Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix - Malaysia holds this annual event at the Sepang International Circuit, a regional hub for motor sports. It is an international event participanted by top riders in the world. Last year it was held on 19 October to 21 October 2001. For current year do check the date if you are in town.
December Malaysia celebrates the Hari Raya Festival during this month and it is an important occasion for the Muslims. Several makeshift stalls selling varieties of food will be set up in the early morning and evening. It is a great opportunity to savour these foods. (NB: During the month leading to the Hari Raya, the Muslims will be fasting during the day and it is considered rude to offer food to them.)
