Travelling within Malaysia
KTM (Malaysian Railways) provides an impressive network to all the states. There are special deals for tourist in terms of passes to travel on the train. Do find out the details at the Railway stations.

A Light Rail Transit System (LRT) is available in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur which links to the adjoining Klang Valley district. Another rail service known as KTM Komuter connects suburban or adjoining districts with Kuala Lumpur.

Buses are the common mode of public transport for the locals within the state. Interstate air-conditioned buses ply between most cities and towns in Malaysia. They offer comfortable rides at reasonable rates. These are to be found in all major cities and offer air-conditioned comfort at metered rates. There are set charges for outstation travel.

An easier mode to get to destinations is taxi services. Do approach the hotel staff for assistance for booking one. Do note there are 2 forms of taxis. Interstate taxis that provides transport between states and inter city taxis that travels within the cities. Interstate taxis rates have to be negotiated and agreed before the journey. Whilst, inter city taxis fares are meter read. Please do note there some inter city taxi drivers prefer to negotiate the fare rather than relying on the taxi meter readings.

For self drivers, car rentals are available but you will require a valid drivers licence issued by your government or an international drivers permit. Please do note the traffic direction flow is on the left.

Trishaws, a three wheel cycle pedaled by cyclist is a leisurely transport mode for tourist sightseeing, especially, in the states of Malacca, Georgetown, Kota Bahru, and Kuala Terengganu.

Ferry services are offered to major islands. In Peninsular Malaysia, the ferry service between Butterworth and Penang Island is still popular despite the Penang Bridge link. A modern ferry service is offered from Kuala Perlis on the mainland to Pulau Langkawi, a popular tourist destination. Regular boat services are available on the Lumut-Pangkor Island and the Mersing-Tioman Island routes. A longboat service is available from Labuan to Menumbak in Sabah. In the riverine areas of Sarawak, the major means of transportation are air-conditioned express boats.

Self Drivers Tips - Driving on North - South Expressway

If you are driving on the North - South Expressway:

  • Observe the speed limits
  • Switch on your hazard lights in case you need to stop in the emergency lane
  • Rest if you feel tired after a long drive. Stop at the next Rest and Service Area/ Layby or change drivers if possible
  • Make sure you have enough fuel to get to your destination
  • Road signs work on a backtracking system. Seeing a sign probably means that you've just missed the turning
  • Exits to the main towns are generally on the left, watch out for signs placed 1km and 500m

    Services on the Expressway:

  • Rest & Service Areas - Located approximately at every 60 kilometres, these areas provide food stalls, toilets, showers, public telephones, service station, shelter, parking areas, surau and children's playground.
  • Laybys - Located between Rest & Service Areas, they provide parking areas, toilets and public telephone
  • Vista Point - Provides picnic and parking spots.
  • Traffic Monitoring Centre (TMC) - Handles the PLUS Hotline 03-2692 0000 to assist Expressway users' queries for 24 hours.
  • PLUSronda - This is a 24 hour service to assist motorists on the Expressway. It handles towing, accidents and general traffic management for a fee.
  • Emergency Telephone - Located every 2 kilometres on either side of the Expressway.

    Self Drivers Tips - Car Rental

  • Read the car rental agreement carefully. You are bound for a minimum liability even when damages are insignificant.
  • Check car insurance coverage (advisable to purchase additional car insurance)
  • Know your liabilities for Fine & Penalty for traffic violation
  • Check petrol and rental charges
  • Check the car return date, time & late charges
  • Keep a copy of the signed agreement
  • Get a written confirmation for any refund agreed by the merchant
